December is here and, as you may have noticed, the festive season is in full swing. Time to rip open those advent calendar doors and prepare for a month of good cheer, even better tidings and excess in pretty much everything. To get you in the mood we offer some helpful suggestions for gift giving, from miniature landmarks to collectable refreshments, as well as some online and offline distraction from the inevitable late-December slump.
Make: Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage Model Kit
A Kent-based family business, Postcard Models create beautiful laser cut kits of familiar UK structures to build at home. From Shepherd’s huts to snooker halls, pubs to high streets, their scale buildings are packed with carefully observed detail. Our personal favourite, a 1:148 version of author/director Derek Jarman’s iconic Prospect Cottage in Dungeness can be purchased in both flat-pack and assembled form - the perfect gift to keep friends or family busy during those long post-Christmas days.
Visit: Hervé Télémaque: A Hopscotch of the Mind, Serpentine Gallery
Serpentine Galleries play host to Haitian artist Hervé Télémaque, his first institutional show in the UK. Seven decades of work on show, bright, bold and playful, Télémaque uses a pop aesthetic to respond to the big issues of the day, from the Cold War to contemporary French politics. Collage, paintings and drawings piece together references spanning consumer culture, literary heavyweights and 1960s surrealism - “the artist’s extensive body of work consistently draws connections between the realms of interior consciousness, social experience and the complex relationships between image and language.” Running until 30 January, one to catch over the Christmas break.
Tour: Inside the home of Belgian modernist Jozef Schellekens, Sight Unseen
The 1930s home of architect Jozef Schellekens, a protected historical monument and museum in Turnhout, Belgium, this heavy glass and beige brick structure houses a colour-rich collection of bespoke furniture and playful personal touches. Festive red and green found in various shades across the duplex, the interior subverts the typical domestic set-up of the era, hidden nooks, modular elements, multiple levels and work/play spaces sit side by side, warmed by a friendly palette. Jump in.
Drink: Artist Gaurab Thakali for Ancestrel Wines/Turi Marino
Ancestrel Wines call on London artist Gaurab Thakali to illustrate a trio of wines from Sicily-based maker Turi Marino. Natural wines created with minimal intervention, the collection includes a Vulcano Bianco, a blend of Moscato and Inzolia, Vulcano Chiaro, 100% Frappato and Vulcano Rosso, “a classic Nero d'Avola” - all decorated with scenes from Mount Etna in Thakali’s trademark vivid palette. A guaranteed Christmas list hit.
Read: Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style, Jason Jules & Graham Marsh
Writer and friend of Drake’s, Jason Jules examines the evolution of prep across black culture in Black Ivy: A Revolt in Style, a must-have volume dropping just in time for gift giving season. Figures familiar and unfamiliar from the worlds of politics, music, art, literature and beyond become part of a wider narrative around breaking with convention, shaping community and, importantly, the power of feeling good in what we wear. “For the first time ever, we explore the major role this style of clothing played during this period of upheaval and social change, and what these clothes said about the men who wore them.”
Product Focus: Red Lambswool Shawl Collar Cardigan
A particularly apt shade for the festive period, our Shawl Collar Cardigan is a versatile winter layer that works over a shirt and under a heavy winter coat, or in place of a blazer for a relaxed cold weather tailoring set up. Knitted in Scotland, the ancestral home of beautiful and hardy knitwear, this chunky cardigan is finished with patch pockets and knotted leather buttons.
