The Denim Chore Jacket

It goes without saying that clothes should be comfortable, but the best clothes are also a comfort. The thrill of a new piece of clothing is undeniable, but there is something to be said for the unique familiarity that a garment takes on over a period of years: the wear and tear that could belong to you only, making up a personal history, of sorts.
All well-made clothing should age beautifully, but certain items really lend themselves to this kind of gradual patination. For decades, military surplus, French chore coats, and denim jackets have been the saviour of style-conscious-but-lazy men, not only because of their timeless aesthetic appeal, but because they can be worn into the ground with little care, and only improve once they’ve begun to show signs of repeated use.
Our Indigo Selvedge Denim Five-Pocket Chore Jacket, shown in
its brand new condition (left), and with a year of wear (right).
We decided to bring two of these staple items – the chore coat and the denim jacket – and combine them to maximum effect. We took our popular Five-Pocket Chore Jacket (so called because it is a counterpart to our Five-Pocket Trousers, not, as you may think, because of the number of pockets it has – it actually has six pockets) and had it made up in a heavyweight selvedge denim. In doing so, we have created a piece of clothing with all the utility of a chore jacket – a surfeit of pockets; a comfortable, roomy shape – but that will age like a pair of raw jeans.
Finishing things off with classic copper rivets and contrast stitching, and you have an unbeatable everyday jacket, unmatched in its durability and timeless design. If you feel so inclined, you could even wear it to do your chores. It won’t let you down.
