Michael Hill's Seasonal Favourites

We asked our Creative Director Michael Hill for a selection of his favourite pieces from our current season, as well as a thought or two on what makes these items special.

Blue Fisherman Knit Mohair-Cotton Jumper

You would typically associate a fisherman jumper with the winter, but in this blend of mohair and cotton it's a wonderful piece for the spring. I also love the colour: it's a beautiful, washed-out blue that looks like you've had it for 20 years already.

Navy Basketweave Wool Brass Button Double-Breasted Blazer

It might sound strange, but to me this is a perfect piece of quarantine clothing. The more you dress it down, the better it looks: you could even throw it over pyjamas and still look stylish. Otherwise, pair it with faded jeans, or some old chinos.

Green Embroidered Flag Emblem Pique Cotton Polo Shirt

We had always wanted to do our own version of the short sleeve pique polo, with an embroidered emblem on the chest, so I'm very excited that we've finally done it. It's a substantial pique cotton which will only improve with time and wear. I can see this becoming a real staple for a lot of men.

Navy and Brown Houndstooth Wool-Cotton Jacket

We developed this fabric with Abraham Moon up in Yorkshire, because we were after something that had the look and body of tweed, but that was light enough to wear right through the spring. It's a mix of wool and cotton, which really does the trick.

Khaki Brown Cotton Tropical Stable Vest

This is a layer I throw over almost anything: casualwear, tailoring, you name it. It's made from a lovely dry waxed cotton, produced by the experts at Halley Stevensons. The lining is particularly fun, with a patchwork design made up from the Japenese linen shirtings you can find elsewhere in the collection.

Dark Green Linen Jacket

This linen is just such a great colour. It might seem a little bit unusual at first, but I think it's deceptively easy to wear. And despite it being a very dark shade of green, I think it's the perfect tone for summer.

Navy Striped Linen Hiking Jersey

This is another fun piece, and something new for us. In a way, it's our take on a classic Breton jersey, but with a mock neck, and a single seam at the back. As before, wear it with anything - I particularly like pairing mine with a tailored jacket.

Green Cotton Chevron Rugby Shirt

This rugby is a rather special piece, and one of the items from this season that I've worn the most. It's based on a vintage piece that I got from the inimitable vintage collector Gauthier Borsarello. We made our version with a Japanese yarn that has a lovely irregularity to it.

Turquoise Block Check Linen Spread Collar Shirt

My grandfather used to have these envelopes full of shirting swatches, and I found a swatch of this cloth inside one of them that I held onto for years. It has always been my intention to work with a mill and recreate it, and this season we finally did. It's a bold check, and certainly not for everyone, but the colours are so rich, particularly in the sunshine.

Green, Orange and White Multi-Stripe Repp Silk Tie

I had to include this repp silk number, because a friend recently said to me that if I were a tie, this is what I would look like! Maybe he's right, but either way it's a great piece of neckwear, and one I've been wearing a lot.
